Snow Days

Well i'm not dissapointed anymore...
We recently relocated from Avery to Columbia. When we moved it had only snowed once and just an inch or two. I was sad. I really love watching the snow from inside next to the lovely warm fire place. It fills me with a child like glee. Most likely a result of childhood.
I'm even excited with the occasional power outage. It's an adventure. Once when i was a child we lost power for almost 3 weeks. There was about 8feet of snow and the drifts sometimes got as high as 15 to 20feet. Fallen trees were everywhere.
For my parents - being the self-sufficient survialist types they are - this was not a problem. The woodstove heated the house and with the generator running we had most modern conviences. I remember my Dad outside thawing frozen pipes with a torch so we could have running water.
The generator ran on gasoline. To get more gasoline meant making the mile drive down our partially dirt road to the actual highway, then making the rest of the 6 or 7 miles into the nearest station. This really was not such a big deal as my Dad religiously plowed the mile or so of our road every morning and evening to keep it managable. This management included dragging fallen trees out of the road. Caltrans took care of the highway.
Generator or no, our usual TV watching at night gave way to long hours of Scrabble and Checkers. I think this is why, though I still couldn't win a Spelling Bee, I enjoy the game so much.
Every couple of days our nearest neighbor, Less, would snowmobile the 2miles over to check on us. He'd get off that machine looking like the abominable snowman and begin peeling off layers. Layer after layer, jackets, coats, scarves, gloves, hat, goggles, snowsuit, snowboots and finally a person would emerge. He'd come inside where my mom would give him something warm to drink and he and my Dad would talk shop about all the repairs they would be doing come the snowmelt. Although I don't really remember him all that well, I remember he always had kind words for me and sometimes presents or candy.
...getting back to my lack of dissapointment...
It doesn't usually snow in Columbia. It did a few inches last year which was the first time in about 10years that that had happened. But the worlds climate is rapidly changing. We believe it will probably continue to snow in Columbia from now till the next ice age.
It snowed little over a foot last night. Chain controll in Jamestown even! We lost power around 11pm and according to PG&E there is no telling when it will be back on.
Thankfull we have a woodstove in our home and a shed full of nice dry wood. Regularly we aren't supposed to use it, renter's insurance and what-not, but our landlords gave this exact scenerio as a time when it would be okay. Its like they predicted this would happen.
I'm blogging from my Mother-in-Laws house. Elex is posting videos on YouTube. Soon we will return home to our cold house and make warm. Cat will be happy.
